May 21, 2019

Twenty-five Yale College Environmental Studies graduates received B.S. or B.A. degrees on Monday, May 20th.  Congratulations to this incredibly talented group of scholars!

These graduates are highly motivated by their passion to preserve important ecological systems, to right the wrongs of environmental injustices and environmental racism, to reverse the environmental consequences of climate change, to find sustainable solutions for our planet, to make the environment more protective of human health, and to protect vulnerable species.

This year’s class hails from Australia, mainland China, central Kenya, South Africa, Wales, the East Coast, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West Coast, and Hawaii. They are diverse and extremely accomplished. They include a documentary filmmaker, poet, song writer, designer, comic, fly fisherman, inventor, Yale Daily News reporter, Yale Herald publisher, a member of the Yale Symphony Orchestra, a member of Whim ‘n Rhythm, an EMT and Rescue Diver, and two pilots. They competed on 10 different varsity teams: hockey, football, sailing, women’s crew, men’s crew, field hockey, swimming, gymnastics, cross country, and fencing.

Their individuality is reflected in their academic paths at Yale. Seven were double majors in different subjects, including: Architecture, Political Science, Economics, Mechanical Engineering, Geology and Geophysics, Environmental Engineering, and History. Eight completed additional concentrations (MAPs) in Energy Studies, Human Rights, or Education Studies.

Eight graduated with Latin honors and seven won senior prizes. Three graduated magna cum laude, five graduated cum laude, two won first place library prizes for outstanding senior essays, four were awarded the Gaylord Donnelley Prize for excellent interdisciplinary scholarship demonstrated in their senior essays, and one won the Sabin Sustainable Venture Prize for his start-up, Green Gear Supply Company.
