EVST Student Post-Grad Experiences

Marissa Medici ‘19 EVST BA was a FoodCorps service member at P.S. 108 in East Harlem: ”It was an incredibly rewarding and formative first post-grad position.  During my service term, I worked with the P.S. 108 community to co-create a culturally relevant food curriculum that centered the needs and wants of students, parents, and administrators.  This curriculum took the form of weekly cooking/gardening lessons, cafeteria taste tests, and field trips as well as live-streamed cooking lessons during the latter third of the year.  Although I initially fell in love with FoodCorps because it allowed me to pursue two of my passions–environmental justice and food, I soon realized that the best part of the job was connecting with students, whether that was through making salsa together or simply asking them how their day is going. I’m grateful FoodCorps provided an opportunity for me to develop community-based advocacy skills and to address some of the structural inequities that result in health disparities.” Reach out to Marissa with questions!

Tristan Furnary ‘20 EVST BS Human Health & the Environment ’21 MPH spent last summer interning at ACAT: ”It was a great experience working as an intern for Alaska Community Action on Toxics (ACAT). I had the opportunity to lead my own policy-oriented investigative report on the climate change and the health effects associated with the petrochemical industry. This was my main project but I also designed infographics on minimizing exposure to carcinogens associated with breast cancer for the Alaska Run for Women, developed fact sheets on pesticides common to Alaska, and helped create community gardens while teaching organic gardening techniques. Throughout all of these projects I was able to collaborate with my coworkers who come from diverse backgrounds and learn about their experiences that motivated them to join ACAT. It is a remarkably welcoming organization with great people all working towards protecting community health, especially those who are most vulnerable, and promoting environmental justice.” Reach out to Tristan with questions!
