Emily Horgen ’24 is pursuing a joint Juris Doctor at Duke University School of Law and Master of Environmental Management at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment.

After graduating from Yale in 2024 with a double major in Environmental Studies and East Asian Studies, Emily continued her studies at Duke University. At Yale, she concentrated in Sustainability and Natural Resources.

Emily’s graduate studies focus on Environmental Economics and Policy and Coastal and Marine Systems. Through Duke’s Silliman Lab, she designed a research project examining carbon sequestration in coastal salt marshes. Her broader interests include environmental policy, biodiversity conservation, climate technology, and the effects of climate and land-use change on ecosystems.

During her first year at Duke Law, Emily served as a first-year representative to the Environmental Law Society and volunteered on pro bono projects with the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic. She previously gained experience working on environmental policy issues in the U.S. Senate and climate technology investment projects with BlackRock’s Decarbonization Partners.

Emily spent the following summer as a Litigation Fellow with Yale Law School’s Climate Change and Animal Agriculture Legal Initiative. In this role, she conducted legal research and explored strategies for holding animal agriculture companies accountable for their contributions to climate pollution.

By bringing together environmental science, policy, finance, and law, Emily is developing an interdisciplinary approach to advancing climate action and protecting coastal and marine ecosystems.
