Healing Our Planet by Radically Listening to Communities - A Virtual Conversation with Dr. Kinari Webb and Dean Ann Kurth

Event time:
Tuesday, March 8, 2022 - 12:00pm
Event description:

Tropical rainforests are the lungs of the Earth. They cool and heal the planet. Losing forests means increased carbon emissions, zoonotic pandemics, and mass extinction. In 2007, Dr. Kinari Webb (Yale MD, ’02) pioneered an experiment in reversing deforestation that entailed listening to experts—the communities encircling a Bornean rainforest—and then facilitating their solutions for integrating the care of humans and their environment. Health In Harmony, the NGO Dr. Webb founded in the US, partnered with the Indonesian NGO she helped found to implement the community’s solutions of increased access to healthcare and training in organic farming. This approach succeeded brilliantly in protecting the forest while dramatically improving communities’ wellbeing. Health In Harmony, has replicated this approach in Madagascar, and Brazil, and is working to scale up globally.

In this talk, Dr. Kinari Webb and Dr. Ann Kurth, Dean of the Yale School of Nursing and a Health In Harmony Director, will discuss this ambitious effort, and the opportunity for members of the Yale community to get involved.

This event is sponsored by Yale School of Nursing Office of Global Affairs & Planetary Health.
