Data Team – Social Data Scientist (hiring 2)

5-10 hrs per week (2021-2022 academic year)

The social data scientist will work with our interdisciplinary team to advance cutting-edge, data-driven research on climate change communication. The data scientist will support domestic and international climate change communication efforts by researching and obtaining datasets on public opinion, extreme weather, clean energy, climate finance, media, demographics, and other related areas. The social data scientist will also clean and analyze datasets, and merge and integrate them with survey data to develop evidence-based research products and tools. Additional responsibilities include developing tables, charts, and maps for data validation, quality control, interactive website tool development, and public outreach materials.

Tasks

  • Obtain, clean, prepare data for analysis and modeling;

  • Manage and document datasets;

  • Participate in several highly collaborative, interdisciplinary research teams;

  • Develop visualizations for research and public outreach

Required Skills:

  • Programming proficiency in R (1 year minimum; two classes)

  • Experience with GoogleSheets, Excel, etc.

  • Basic statistics

  • Strong organization and writing skills

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Tableau, RShiny, Datawrapper, and similar tools

  • Experience with collaborative coding projects

  • Experience with web development, design, and interactive graphics

Partnerships Team – Student Team Manager (hiring 1)

10-15 hrs per week (2021-2022 academic year)

The Partnerships Student Team Manager will primarily supervise a team of student research assistants that are helping conduct market research, developing outreach materials, and supporting Partnerships program’s work with partners. As needed, the Student Team Manager will roll up their sleeves to support outreach and building external relationships for the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. 

Primary responsibilities (60%):

  • Support the Partnerships strategy and outreach to diverse climate organizations, ranging from large institutions to small grassroots groups. 

  • Supervise a team of 4-5 student research assistants working on the Partnership Program. This includes facilitating weekly meetings, assigning tasks, reviewing and editing the deliverables of the student team, and ensuring tasks are completed within set timelines.  

  • Ensure overall student team success through project management and team development. 

Additional responsibilities (40%):

  • Develop outreach and marketing materials for the Partnership program including case studies, presentations, and key messages. 

  • Develop tools for partner organizations to run digital and field experiments, such as campaign plan blueprints.  

  • Test and deploy new tools for partner organizations. 

  • Support tracking our success through the Constituent Relationship Management system (Salesforce).  

  • Further develop materials for consulting and training in climate communication strategy, tactics, and tools to improve the communication and engagement capacity of partner organizations and the broader climate change community.

Desired experience:

  • Experience leading and managing a team, whether volunteer or staff.  

  • Experience in issue or political campaigns, including field and/or digital campaigns. 

  • Experience with online message testing using social media platforms such as Facebook.

  • With the YPCCC research team, help assess the utility of new YPCCC research products, tools and data.

Partnerships Team – Project Manager (hiring 1)

10 hrs per week (2021-2022 academic year)

The Partnerships Project Manager supports the partner-facing consultancy work of the Partnerships Team. The Project Manager ensures the success of our partnerships by planning and coordinating our relationships with partners, keeping track of the progress of partnerships along the engagement pipeline, and ensuring that follow ups are conducted in a timely fashion. The Project Manager supports the Partnerships Team in engaging with our partners and ensuring a high-quality experience for them throughout the engagement pipeline – from the introductory call to project planning, and finally to capturing learnings from the project. The Project Manager stays informed of partner needs and addresses them to ensure that partnerships are progressing smoothly.  

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Partnerships strategy and outreach to diverse climate organizations, ranging from large institutions to small grassroots groups. 

  • Attend partner meetings when possible and keep track of key takeaways and action items. 

  • Keep partnerships on track by creating a partner plan, and logging progress of partnerships into the Salesforce CRM system. 

  • Track weekly progress of partnerships to assess partner needs at every stage of the partnership pipeline, identify priority follow ups and deliverables, and establish project plans and timelines. 

  • Coordinate across staff and students to ensure partner success.  

  • Identify opportunities to deepen partner relationships.  

  • Further develop materials for consulting and training in climate communication strategy, tactics, and tools to improve the communication and engagement capacity of partner organizations and the broader climate change community.

The Latinx Community Partnerships Assistant will support outreach and building external relationships with key constituencies, such as Latinx community organizations and environmental justice organizations, for the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. In this role, the Latinx Community Partnerships Assistant will help conduct market research, develop outreach materials, and message experiment templates in support of the Partnerships program’s work. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Partnerships strategy and outreach to key constituencies and diverse climate organizations, ranging from large institutions to small grassroots groups, with a focus on Latinx communities 

  • Develop outreach and marketing materials for the Partnership program including case studies, presentations, and key messages. 

  • Supporting partner organizations to run digital and field experiments.  

  • Support tracking our success through the Salesforce Constituent Relationship Management system and developing case studies.

  • Further develop materials for consulting and training in climate communication strategy, tactics, and tools to improve the communication and engagement capacity of partner organizations and the broader climate change community. 

  • With the YPCCC research team, help assess the utility of new YPCCC research products, tools and data.

Desired knowledge and experience:

  • Landscape view of Latinx advocacy and community organizations. 

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish). 

  • Experience in issue or political campaigns, including field and/or digital campaigns. 

  • Experience working with diverse communities.  

  • Experience with online message testing using social media platforms such as Facebook.

The Black Community Partnerships Assistant will support outreach and building external relationships with key constituencies, such as Black-led or -focused community organizations and environmental justice organizations, for the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. In this role, the Black Community Partnerships Assistant will help conduct market research, develop outreach materials, and message experiment templates in support of the Partnerships program’s work. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Support the Partnerships strategy and outreach to key constituencies and diverse climate organizations, ranging from large institutions to small grassroots groups, with a focus on Black community organizations. 

  • Develop outreach and marketing materials for the Partnership program including case studies, presentations, and key messages. 

  • Supporting partner organizations to run digital and field experiments. 

  • Test and deploy new tools for partner organizations. 

  • Support tracking our success through the Salesforce Constituent Relationship Management system and case studies.

Social Team: Deputy Social Media Manager (hiring 2)

10-15 hrs a week (2021-2022 academic year)

This role is intended to function as a partner to our social media manager and the chief editor on our posts. This position is ideal for first-year YSE students who are interested in helping develop YPCCC’s brand and identity.

Tasks:

  • Responsible for oversight of graphics drafted by the student team for either our Instagram or Facebook/Twitter accounts

  • Suggests edits to post, image, and video graphics drafted by student team members

  • Ensures adherence to and guides development of YPCCC brand standards

  • Work collaboratively with social media manager to help coordinate the YPCCC social team

Preferred Skills:

  • An eye for detail and a knack for simple, effective design

  • Experience in design, comms, or social media role a big plus

  • Familiarity with brand design principles a plus

Ideal for visually-minded organizers who are obsessive about the right way to communicate messages to key audiences, and strategic communicators that are interested in developing their management skills.

Social Team: Social media producer (hiring 2 or more)

5-10 hrs a week (2021-2022 academic year)

The folks that make our Facebook and Twitter what it is. YPCCC research is relevant to many categories of current events, from renewable energy to extreme weather, and our social media producers help put the news of the day in context.

Tasks:

  • Drafting 3-5 FB posts and tweets per assigned day for YPCCC online properties

  • Creating graphics using Canva

  • Responding to breaking news and keeping an eye on the latest climate change stories

Preferred Skills:

  • Attention to detail and strong writing skills

  • Experience managing a Facebook page or professional Twitter account is a plus

  • Awareness of best practices and trends in social media content

  • Digital design and data visualization / infographic creation experience

Ideal for somebody with less time on their hands who still wants to contribute to the YPCCC program. Those who are plugged into the news on climate change and eager to help show how our work relates. Digital novices who want to learn by doing.

Social Team: Instagram Producer (hiring 2 or more)

5-10 hrs a week (2021-2022 academic year)

The folks that make our Instagram what it is. YPCCC research is relevant to many categories of current events, from renewable energy to extreme weather, and our Instagram producers help put the news of the day in front of Instagram’s young audience.

Tasks:

  • Drafting 1 Instagram post per assigned days (Saturday and Sunday) for YPCCC online properties

  • Creating graphics using Canva

  • Creating Instagram stories once a week (2-5 frames each)

  • Responding to breaking news and keeping an eye on the latest climate change stories

  • Creating Insta stories on a regular basis

Preferred Skills:

  • Attention to detail and strong writing skills

  • Experience managing an Instagram page or professional social media account is a plus

  • Awareness of best practices and trends in social media content

  • Digital design and data visualization / infographic creation experience preferred

Ideal for somebody who is interested in social media management, data visualization, journalism, design and/or content creation.

Social Team:  Yale Climate Connections Social Media Manager (hiring 1)

5-10 hrs a week (2021-2022 academic year)

Yale Climate Connections is a nonpartisan, multimedia service providing daily broadcast radio programming and original web-based reporting about climate change. We’re looking for a student to promote the service on social media and engage the current audience with an eye toward growth and deeper interaction.

Tasks:

  • Draft social media content for all published radio stories

  • Work in conjunction with YCC and YPCCC to receive and implement edits on posts

  • Schedule social media content for Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn using the Hootsuite social media scheduling platform

Preferred Skills:

  • Interest in content marketing, journalism, or climate education

  • Experience managing social media accounts a plus

  • Familiarity with image sourcing and editing a plus

Ideal for individuals looking to further develop the YCC brand online — especially those with an interest in content marketing, environmental storytelling, or non-profit journalism. Requires more time and responsibility than a standard producer role.

Social Team:  Digital Ads Assistant (hiring 2 or more)

5 hrs a week (2021-2022 academic year)

Digital advertising is one of the most crucial tactics of marketing for online publishers and non-profits. It’s also a very promising avenue for testing out some of our research on attitudes toward climate change. We’re looking for somebody to help produce ads to advance YPCCC goals on both fronts.

Tasks:

  • Drafting Facebook or Google Ads at the discretion of the YPCCC Ads Leads

  • Experiments may include testing content to different audiences, or different messages or images

  • Meeting on Zoom or in person at Sage Hall for a 1-hour block each week to design, draft, and deploy ads

  • Helping maintain a calendar of upcoming ads & tests

Preferred Skills:

  • Attention to detail and strong writing skills

  • Experience managing a Google or Facebook Ads account, or a professional Facebook or Twitter presence, is a plus

  • Awareness of best practices and trends in social media content

  • Marketing or digital comms experience a big plus

Ideal for detail-oriented, metrics-driven writers who like to explore data. Folks who are looking to make use of a fast growing ad platform online for research purposes. Those interested in digital marketing.
