EVST News February 15th, 2021

February 15, 2021

Thank you to everyone who attended EVST Peer Mentor Office Hours last week. It was wonderful to see all of your faces & I hope that our Peer Mentors were able to answer some of your questions. We hope to have similar events later in the semester. Please let us know if you have any feedback or ideas for ways to bring the EVST community together.

I want to take some time in this newsletter to recognize two members of our Yale Community who have passed recently.

Andrew Dowe was the DUS of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and Associate Director of the Office of LGBTQ Resources. I will remember his smile and hospitality. He had a way of making every student feel cared for and seen. Click here to learn more about how to donate to a Memorial Fund in honor for Andrew.

I took a class with Kevin last year and remember catching frogs and walking through swamps with our classmates. He is a member of the YSE community and beloved to many. Here is a link to the virtual tribute wall for the Yale Community to remember Kevin and a GoFundMe link to support his family.

Additionally, we want to remind you that Yale Mental Health & Counseling (business hours: 203-432-0290; after hours: 203-432-0123) and the Yale Chaplain’s Office (203-432-1128 or chaplain.yale.edu) are also available to support you in this time of loss. I want to share some words from a mentor that have been giving me strength: “grief is complicated and does not follow rules - and that holding space for others also means it is ok to take space ourselves.” Take the time you need to take care of yourself and your community during these times.

Warmly,

Lauren

Opportunities

Opportunities with later deadlines or that have been featured in our previous newsletter have been moved to a Google Doc below so that the newsletter can be updated with the most relevant deadlines and new postings can stand out more.

Spring

The YCC, Yale Student Environmental Coalition (YSEC), and the Yale Office of Sustainability & Sustainability Liaisons present the February Climate Action Pledge. They’re encouraging Yalies to take on a more active role in combating the climate crisis, with equity and justice in mind. Of course, this pledge does not aim to distract from the urgent need for sustained and powerful environmental reform at other levels, and environmental justice must be centered in every conversation on climate. Still, every individual action makes a difference. Take the pledge and you’ll have a chance to win a gift card!

Want to join a network of 11,000 individuals across all 50 states working to push for effective and equitable climate policies? The State Climate Policy Network (which is part of the nonprofit Climate XChange) includes policymakers, climate advocates, conservationists, farmers, business leaders, university professors, youth, Indigenous leaders, and countless others. As a member of our network, you will receive invitations to our monthly Deep Dive webinars, national calls, state climate policy updates, weekly newsletter, and much more. If you’re interested, simply email naomi.shimberg@yale.edu indicating your interest, or sign up directly here

LEED Green Associate (GA) Training - Webinar and Online self-paced options with Leading Green | LEED is simply a sustainability scorecard for green buildings. Buildings can become LEED Certified as can people! Energy-Related Student Opportunities from Sena Sugiono (‘24): If anyone is interested in joining either of the following two opportunities, please send an email to sena.sugiono@yale.edu.

  • A legislative team that will advocate for climate policies. The members will engage in bill selection, bill review, constituent impact analysis, writing a letter to the editor, local impact outreach, petitioning, and direct lobbying to Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (CT-03). The opportunity allows you to directly engage in the lobbying process. Along the way, there will be workshops, seminars, and fireside chats with experienced lobbyists and political analysts.
  • A  committee to plan Yale’s first-year Sustainability Orientation (Energy component). We will be working with the Yale College Council and the Yale Carbon Charge Working Group on this project. Since we received requests for the planning committee to be an open committee, we are welcoming anyone who is interested.
