EVST BS '25, Global Health Studies Certificate, Energy Studies Certificate

Sofia Manriquez (EVST ‘25) is from southern San Diego, California, pursuing a BS in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Human Health and the Environment, as well as certificates in Energy Studies and Global Health Studies. Sofia’s interests span the clean energy transition, corporate sustainability, and ensuring communities’ access to clean air and water. This summer, Sofia is conducting field and lab work at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institute of Oceanography in Dr. Kim Prather’s lab, researching the public health implications from a growing transnational sewage contamination crisis in Imperial Beach, California. Sofia is collecting water and air samples for a chemical and heavy metal analysis, of which she will explore in her senior thesis. For the second half of her summer, Sofia will be interning in Deloitte’s New York City office, as an Audit and Assurance ESG and Sustainability intern.

Considering the climate emergency, Sofia is keenly interested in how governments and corporations can enact long-lasting sustainability solutions, addressing the unequal impacts of climate change on communities worldwide. She was inspired to apply to Global Health Studies as an avenue to pursue her passion for the intersection of environmental and human health challenges and solutions. On campus, Sofia plays on the women’s club water polo team and loves working as a Communication and Consent Educator, an associate in the Yale Undergraduate Consulting Group, and as a Co-Founder and President of Internal Affairs of AERIS. Previously, Sofia was a college advising fellow for Matriculate and an Energy Liaison for the Student Energy Efficiency Program.
