Design Your Own Concentration
One of the unique features of the Environmental Studies major is the opportunity to create a custom concentration. Students whose interests extend beyond the established concentration options may work closely with a Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) to design an individualized course of study that reflects their academic passions and career goals.
A custom concentration allows students to combine courses from across Yale to explore emerging environmental topics or interdisciplinary areas not fully represented by the existing concentrations. Every custom concentration is carefully planned to ensure a coherent program of study while maintaining the academic rigor and interdisciplinary perspective that define the Environmental Studies major.
Examples of Recent Custom Concentrations
Recent EVST students have designed custom concentrations in areas such as:
- Communities of Environment and Energy
- Environmental Communications & Media
- Environmental Health & Policy
- Infrastructure Investing
- International Development
- International Policy
- Sustainability & Development
- Urban and Coastal Resilience
- Urban Food Environments
These examples illustrate the flexibility of the Environmental Studies major and the many ways students can tailor their education to their individual interests. Whether your passion lies at the intersection of science, policy, economics, business, public health, communications, engineering, design, or the arts, a custom concentration allows you to create a pathway that supports your academic and professional goals.
Students interested in designing a custom concentration are encouraged to consult with a Director of Undergraduate Studies early in their academic planning to develop a proposal and identify a coherent sequence of courses.
