The EVST Major

At Yale, Environmental Studies offers the best of both worlds: the resources and opportunities of a world-class research university and the close-knit community of a small undergraduate program.

Environmental challenges are among the defining issues of our time. Whether your interests lie in climate change, biodiversity, conservation, environmental justice, sustainability, food systems, public health, or environmental policy, the Environmental Studies major provides the knowledge and experience to understand complex environmental issues and develop meaningful solutions.

Grounded in Yale’s liberal arts tradition, the Environmental Studies major combines the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences through an interdisciplinary curriculum. Students begin with a broad foundation before pursuing one of nine concentrations that reflect their academic interests and career goals.

Beyond the classroom, EVST students conduct original research, complete an independent senior essay, participate in internships and field experiences, receive funding through programs such as the Summer Environmental Fellowship, and work closely with faculty mentors. These experiences prepare graduates for careers and graduate study across a wide range of environmental fields.
